Description
Welcome to Kiddo Steps, a vibrant and engaging social skills group crafted for children in Grades 1-3. This year, we’re harnessing the Social Thinking curriculum to build a foundation in perspective-taking—helping kids grasp how others think and feel, make smart social inferences, and ultimately sharpen their problem-solving skills. Paired with Conversation Training, Kiddo Steps blends playful activities, role-playing, and hands-on lessons to nurture independence in social settings. In our supportive space, children practice recognizing social cues, expressing themselves boldly, and forging meaningful connections—all while growing into confident, independent social thinkers ready to thrive in school and beyond.

Kiddo Steps is perfect for children in Grades 1-3 who find social interactions tricky. This group shines for kids who:
-
Struggle to explain their actions or understand the reasons behind their behavior
-
Have difficulty recognizing and labeling their own emotions, as well as interpreting the feelings of others
-
Find it challenging to predict how others might behave or feel in certain situations
-
Have trouble understanding that others may have different thoughts, feelings, and perspectives
-
Experience challenges in understanding the intentions or motivations behind others’ actions
-
May not yet realize that their behavior can influence how others think, feel, or respond
-
Face difficulties with social conventions, such as maintaining shared attention and staying engaged in group interactions
This group is ideal for young learners ready to take steps toward social independence with gentle guidance.
3 Routines
Kiddo Steps sessions are thoughtfully designed to foster social skills and independence through fun, structured activities, including:
-
Feelings Check-In: A lively opening where kids name their emotions and explore how others might feel, building self-awareness and empathy.
-
Perspective-Taking Practice: Playful activities, inspired by the Social Thinking curriculum, where kids build awareness that others have their own thoughts and feelings—predicting what someone might think or feel in different scenarios.
-
Speaking Up Scenarios: Guided exercises where kids rehearse protesting or sharing opinions, boosting their ability to assert themselves respectfully.
-
Problem-Solving Play: Role-plays and group challenges that help kids decode feelings, understand problems, and find solutions independently.
-
Cue Detective Games: From hands-on activities spotting body language, facial expressions, and tone, sharpening their ability to read social signals to reading the situations (social inference)
-
Reflection Circle: A closing moment to share successes, discuss different viewpoints, and celebrate their growing independence in navigating social moments.
